Determining Karat Value (Fineness)
The purity of gold is described by its fineness, parts per 1000, or by the karat, a 1/24 part of pure gold by weight (the spelling "carat" is used in the British Commonwealth). Pure gold is alloyed (mixed) with other metals to make it more durable and affordable or to change its color. The table below lists karat qualities of gold jewelry.
